Different aspects of globalization

10 02 2006

Two faces of globalization in today’s press: In the Times, a feature about the Russians planning to bring home their diaspora. The article ends with some figures about various overseas populations:

# The Indian diaspora is estimated at more than 20 million people. In 11 countries there are more than one million Indians

# About three million Irish citizens live abroad, 1.2 million Irish-born. The population of the Irish Republic is four million

# There are more than 30 million Chinese living outside China, mostly in other parts of Asia. China’s population is 1.3 billion

# There are about 5.5 million Greeks living abroad, with more than half in the United States. The population of Greece is 11 million

Another story in the Western Mail is about a Welsh flag-making company, who are seeing a big rise in orders for Danish flags – from protesters who want to burn them. The owner sanguinely notes:

“A lot of flag burners make their own out of strips of cloth but there is a trend among shop owners in certain parts of the world to order in large amounts to sell to protesters. We have had as many orders from Europe as we have from places like the Middle East so this is very much a global phenomenon.”

Update:The globalization of flags for fuel-fodder is discussed by Slate magazine:

A determined protester with an Internet connection could even order a Danish flag from an American manufacturer. As an experiment, the Explainer typed up an order for five high-quality Danish flags to be shipped from an American supplier to an address in Damascus. Total cost: $163.
