Gautam Ghosh – Management Consultant: People loss may not equal to knowledge loss
An excellent point: when you hire staff these days, particularly knowledge workers and experts, you’re also taking their network on board. That has benefits and risks for management, who must act appropriately. Remember, passionate people talk to their peers.

“The most abrupt change in the whole climate record”
27 10 2006Earlier this month, I linked to a report on climate change in the UK, which only talked about the effects of temperatures rising. I commented then that in fact, the complete opposite could happen: polar warming and melting ice caps could affect the Gulf Stream current, and actually lead to temperatures plummetting.
I can’t say that I’m happy to discover that not only is that a theoretical possibility, evidence is starting to appear that it’s already happening. This article in the Guardian today says that in 2004, “a part of the current, which is usually 60 times more powerful than the Amazon river, came to a temporary halt“.
Since the Gulf Stream keeps the UK up to 10 degrees C warmer than it ought to be, that’s scary. Very, very, scary.

Chinese music wiki
27 10 2006An interesting find: I don’t actually remember how I stumbled across this, but anyway… Chaile is an English-language wiki covering the contemporary music scene in China. It’s naturally skewed towards Beijing and Shanghai, and the content is a bit dated, and rather light (it doesn’t even mention Lush under its Beijing Venues section), but it seems like a good idea. Hopefully, it will get some more support if more people know about it?
